In cabinet design, every kitchen has at least three work zones that are created and designed around Prepping, Cooking, and Cleaning tasks. While each zone is essential to the flow of the kitchen, the workhorse of each of these top three zones is by far the Cooking Zone. This space can see a lot of action, from using various pots and pans on the cooking surface where grease and splatters are prevalent to baking cookies, casseroles, or the holiday ham in the oven. This area can also be a key focal point in a kitchen, the ‘hearth’ of the home! (Sorry, not sorry for the pun!)

One of the more recent trends we’ve been seeing when it comes to designing around the Cooking Zone area is the Range Alcove.  The Range Alcove is unique in that a space for the range, as well as ventilation above, is captured on all four sides with either deep cabinetry, panels, walls, or a combination of all of these. This is what creates the alcove, a somewhat cozy area for the range to nestle in, thus creating a beautiful focal point within the kitchen. Range Alcoves can be created in styles from transitional to contemporary and even traditional designs.

Let’s take a look at some Range Alcove designs created by the many talented designers from some of our Dura Supreme showrooms.

The Moody Traditional Stove Alcove

Our cover photo for this blog is of the project below created by Jerilyn Horn of Jerilyn Horn Kitchen & Bath, Burlington, Iowa. The dark painted cabinets are beautifully offset by the plaster alcove with a segmental arch featuring niches on each side of the interior for storing oils and spices. This is a more traditional design that doesn’t feel heavy or dark.

Contempo Trifecta Range Alcove

The stunner pictured below is Contemporary design at its best! This kitchen design features three different materials that complement each other to create a range alcove space that is mature and sophisticated.

Transitional Stunner Alcove Design

The kitchen below is a stunner from our friends at KSI Kitchen & Bath. Designed by Sandra Daubenmeyer at their Macomb, Michigan location, it showcases a gorgeous range alcove created with tall cabinetry and a large quartz mantle. The floating shelf, also made of quartz, stretches across the back wall to provide additional storage for everyday spices and oils.

A luxury kitchen with a transitional, modern farmhouse look featuring an alcove range framed by true-brown stained cabinets and a dramatic quartz hood.

Bold and Sleek Kitchen Alcove Design

Here’s another striking kitchen design featuring a range alcove with an arched opening designed by Kendal Cavalieri Design of Buffalo, New York. This beauty was created with sheet-rocked walls and base cabinets, with the interior lined with handmade tiles and quartz.

Bright and Sleek Alcove Kitchen

This kitchen design shows off a popular design aesthetic in Range Alcoves… a wood box lintel spanning the opening above. A simple yet stated way to add character and texture to the space is using painted walls above and on the sides, with base cabinets offering storage around the range. A full-height quartz backsplash finishes it off.

A Range Alcove Designed for Cozy Cooking

Below is another beautiful example of using a wood lintel above the opening of the range alcove. Notice the niches with shelving on the side walls? This beautiful transformation by Honeycomb Home Design of Arroyo Grande, California, also features a soft texture on the backsplash in the form of patterned tiles.

Two-Tone Statement Range Alcove

Below is a beautiful range alcove designed by our friend Aaron Mauk of Mauk Cabinets by Design of Tipp City, Ohio. The design showcases two-sided end panels used to create the walls of the niche, with a large wood stained wainscot panel topping off the openings, concealing the range hood. Swooning!
